The University of Staffordshire is entering an exciting period of growth and development across its computing, digital and technology provision.

With around 1,500 students and 35 academic staff, the Department of Computer Science and Esports is a successful and financially strong department with excellent student outcomes, strong retention and a distinctive reputation across computing and esports.

From Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence to Esports, the Department combines a long heritage in computing with a future-facing portfolio. Its work spans undergraduate and postgraduate education, apprenticeships, Ministry of Defence-related provision and international partnerships, supported by significant investment, including a £2.5m esports arena.

This is an opportunity to lead a department that is performing well and help shape what comes next. The new Head will refresh the curriculum in response to AI and emerging technologies, develop new products and partnerships, grow apprenticeships and international activity, and make the most of opportunities through the University’s London campus.

The Head of Department will provide clear strategic and academic leadership, sustain strong student outcomes and academic standards, develop colleagues and future capability, and oversee the people, budgets and resources needed to deliver sustainable growth. They will also strengthen relationships with employers, professional bodies and sector partners, while supporting research, knowledge exchange and bid activity.

We are seeking an ambitious, visible and engaging academic leader with a postgraduate qualification in a computing-related discipline. A doctorate would be advantageous, alongside Senior/ Principal Fellowship of Advance HE or a willingness to work towards the appropriate level. You may already be a Head of Department, or an experienced Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor and ready to step into a wider leadership role. A professorial title is not essential, although a Chair may be considered for an exceptional candidate.

You will bring demonstrable leadership, resource and line-management experience, the ability to unite colleagues behind a clear direction, and the confidence to deliver organisational impact. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI or a related field who combine academic credibility with commercial awareness, creativity and an outward-looking approach.

The role is based primarily at the Stoke campus, with periodic travel to Staffordshire University London, currently expected to be around once a fortnight. The University supports flexible working while expecting senior leaders to maintain a visible campus presence in line with business needs. Sponsorship and relocation support are available where required.

For an informal and confidential discussion about the role, please contact Manjit Mundair-Lalli: Manjit Mundair-Lalli manjit.mundair-lalli@gatenbysanderson.com

Following the closing date, applications will be considered and shortlisted candidates will be invited to the final assessment and panel process, anticipated during the week commencing 23 November 2026.
