Help lead the global movement defending freedom of expression

For almost four decades, ARTICLE 19 has worked to ensure that all people, everywhere, can freely express themselves and actively participate in public life. Through research, advocacy, legal expertise and movement-building, we defend and advance freedom of expression and access to information around the world.

Today, freedom of expression faces some of its most significant challenges in a generation. Democratic institutions are under pressure, civic space is shrinking, independent media is under attack, and rapid technological change is reshaping how information is shared, controlled and governed. At the same time, the organisations defending rights are navigating an increasingly complex operating environment.

As we continue our transformation through our strategy, The Power of Our Voices, we are seeking an exceptional individual to become our next Global Executive Director. This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the world's foremost freedom of expression organisations at a pivotal moment in its history.

The Role

Reporting to the International Board, you will provide strategic, organisational and cultural leadership across ARTICLE 19's global network. As our principal ambassador, you will ensure our global voice is heard, representing ARTICLE 19 at international and high-profile forums, strengthening donor and stakeholder relationships, and driving our influence across the freedom of expression movement.

Internally, you will lead the organisation through a period of transformation, ensuring strong governance, effective strategy implementation and long-term organisational sustainability. You will inspire a talented international team, lead global resource mobilisation and help shape the future of freedom of expression worldwide.

About You

You will bring significant executive leadership experience within a complex international organisation, alongside a track record of leading change, securing sustainable income and working effectively with Boards and governance structures. You will have the credibility to act as a global ambassador, build influential partnerships and unite diverse stakeholders behind a common purpose.

Knowledge of freedom of expression, digital rights, media freedom or access to information would be advantageous, as would proficiency in French, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic.

Join Us

This is an opportunity to lead a globally respected organisation at a defining moment for freedom of expression. Through your leadership, you will help ensure that all people can realise the power of their voices.
