Great British Energy Nuclear (GBE‑N) has a mission to safely advance new nuclear projects that provide secure, reliable and sustainable energy for the UK. Our expert team is delivering the UK’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project at Wylfa on Anglesey in North Wales, and GBE‑N also owns a second viable nuclear site at Oldbury in Gloucestershire.

SMRs are smaller and faster to build than conventional gigawatt‑scale nuclear power plants. As delivery progresses, efficiencies are expected to be realised by applying lessons learned from the first unit to subsequent deployments.

GBE-N is planning to establish a Development Company (DevCo) that will deliver a SMR Project, working with a Technology Partner to deliver a First Of A Kind new nuclear power plant (NPP).  Until the DevCo is established the capability to manage and deliver SMR projects will be developed and delivered within GBE-N as an Integrated Project Team (IPT).

The Role

We are seeking an exceptional Technical Director to join the senior leadership team at a defining stage in this First‑of‑a‑Kind programme. Reporting to the Chief Delivery Officer, you will lead the technical function across the Integrated Project Team, shaping the strategy for engineering, design and technology integration, and ensuring a coherent, assured solution aligned with regulatory and safety requirements.

You will bring together multiple delivery partners to establish the standards, systems and governance needed for delivery, while building the technical capability and ways of working required for a complex, evolving environment. As the programme transitions into a Development Company and ultimately an operating entity, you will ensure continuity, integration and long‑term success.

 The Person

This role demands a credible and accomplished technical leader with significant experience delivering major, regulated infrastructure programmes, ideally within nuclear. You will combine deep sector expertise with a track record of leading through complexity and ambiguity, bringing together diverse partners to deliver at pace. Your ability to operate at executive level, engage a wide range of stakeholders and shape delivery in a dynamic environment will be critical.

This is a rare opportunity to lead the technical delivery of a programme of national importance, one that will strengthen energy security, support net zero ambitions and create lasting economic and social value across the UK.
