The organisation

The Government Internal Audit Agency helps government work better for the public. As an executive agency of HM Treasury, GIAA provides independent assurance and insight across most of central government, working with ministers, accounting officers and senior leaders at the heart of complex systems where risk, accountability and value for money matter deeply. With around 450 highly skilled professionals, the Agency is both the majority provider of internal audit services to government and the steward of the internal audit profession across the public sector. GIAA is now moving into its next phase of development, building on a strong reputation for trust and quality while sharpening its impact and confidence across all it does.

The role and context

The Technical Director is a pivotal member of the Agency’s Executive Committee and its technical authority. Created to strengthen consistency, quality and reputational assurance, the role spans ownership of the internal audit methodology, oversight of quality assurance across all GIAA services, and leadership of professional and practice risk. You will act as a trusted adviser on the most sensitive and high‑risk issues, support innovation in audit practice including the use of data, technology and AI, and help ensure the Agency remains aligned with evolving Global Internal Audit Standards. As Head of the Internal Audit Profession, you will also work alongside the Chief Executive to strengthen capability, coherence and confidence across government internal audit as a whole.

The person we’re looking for

This role calls for a senior professional who brings deep technical credibility together with judgement, curiosity and strategic perspective. You will be an inclusive, visible leader, comfortable setting direction while engaging others, and experienced in operating in complex, politically sensitive environments where assurance must be both rigorous and constructive. We are looking for someone with substantial assurance leadership experience, a strong professional grounding, and a clear commitment to public service values. Above all, you will care about quality, not as an abstract ideal, but as something that underpins trust, reputation and the effective stewardship of public resources.

For leaders motivated by scale, purpose and influence, this is an opportunity to shape both an organisation and a profession at a moment of real momentum.
