The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. Its role in promoting public confidence in the democratic process and ensuring  its integrity is more important than ever. The Commission is at the outset of an ambitious Corporate Plan that will lead it through a critical period of UK-wide elections and the implementation of the forthcoming Elections Bill. Increasingly complex campaign finance, the rise of online mis- and dis-information and the Government’s plans to extend voting for 16 year olds in General Elections are just a snapshot of issues that the Commission will engage with in the coming years. The Commission is an ambitious and forward-looking organisation currently at the outset of significant transformation that will enable them to continue delivering for citizens.

The Electoral Commissioners play a critical role leading the organisation through these challenges and opportunities ahead. You will work to shape the development and scrutinise the executive’s delivery of the organisation’s Corporate Plan through the life of this parliament as a non-executive for the organisation. You will bring experience and understanding to ensure the Commission acts consistently and fairly, and promotes principles of equality, diversity and inclusion. Above all, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring our electoral system is one we can all take pride in.

Candidates should have significant strategic leadership experience in an environment where complexity and public scrutiny are the norm, with the ability to advise and challenge at board level. You should demonstrate an understanding of the democratic context in which the Electoral Commission operates and be able to act with integrity, independence and authority within this. You should recognise why equality, diversity and inclusion are such critical factors in the work the Commission does and bring not just a shared commitment, but tangible evidence of positive outcomes in this area.

We are open minded to a range of different professional backgrounds, but we recognise that candidates from technology, digital campaigning, private sector, or regulatory backgrounds would particularly complement the skills of the existing Commissioners. Fundamentally, we are seeking experience and perspectives that will offer something different to the board and, whether from the public, private or voluntary sector, candidates should be capable of supporting, scrutinising and challenging a range of complex issues in a collaborative manner. Candidates do not necessarily need to bring previous board experience; we are looking for those who can demonstrate an ability to influence at this level rather than solely those who have done so previously in a non-executive capacity.

We want the Board’s composition to reflect the diversity of the United Kingdom and have a wide range of experience. We would particularly welcome applications from communities that are currently underrepresented on the Board.

This is a critical and exciting role at the heart of safeguarding the UK electoral process.
