We are supporting a large and high‑performing local authority with the confidential appointment of a new Director of Legal and Democratic Services (MO)— a pivotal senior leadership role at the heart of a complex, high‑profile organisation.

As a key member of the Corporate Management Team and Senior Management Team, this role offers the opportunity to shape the strategic direction of Legal and Democratic Services, safeguard the organisation’s governance, and act as a trusted advisor to the most senior leaders and elected members of the Council

Contract Length:

6 months

Essential duties

The Director of Legal and Democratic Services will:

  • Lead a modern, effective and high‑performing Legal and Democratic Service until a successful permanent hire is made.
  • Act as the Council’s Statutory Monitoring Officer
  • Provide authoritative, strategic legal advice on highly complex and sensitive matters to the Council, Chief Officers and Elected Members 
  • Oversee the delivery of elections and electoral services, acting as Deputy to the Electoral Registration Officer and Returning Officer as required 
  • Represent the Council on legal and democratic issues at local, regional and national levels and build strong relationships with key partners and professional bodies 

This is a role for a strategic, politically astute leader who can balance operational excellence with strong governance, corporate leadership, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Experience required

Essential

  • A qualified solicitor holding a current practising certificate, with significant post‑qualification experience within a single tier authority
  • A strong track record of senior leadership, delivering multiple complex services and functions 
  • Experience providing and commissioning strategic legal advice on complex matters 
  • Highly developed strategic leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams, collaborate, and build influential relationships
  • Excellent communication skills, personal integrity and political awareness
  • Availability to start in April and open to traveling to site up to 3 days per week
