Interim Executive Director of Finance – Healthcare Organisation, Start ASAP – circa 6 Months – NHS Band VSM

We are confidentially supporting an NHS Trust seeking an Interim Executive Director of Finance for an initial six‑month VSM‑banded assignment.  The current postholder is retiring, and the organisation is looking for someone with exceptional attention to detail, strong technical capability, and the presence to inspire confidence at both Board and regulator level.

About the Role
The Interim Executive Director of Finance will lead a structure that includes a Deputy Director of Finance and the wider finance function.  Your leadership will be central to driving high‑quality financial stewardship, strengthening assurance, and ensuring the Trust can meet its statutory responsibilities.

Early Priorities
This is a critical role at a pivotal moment for the Trust.  Working collaboratively with system partners and national regulators will be central to success, as the organisation is currently operating under a deficit plan.  Rebuilding confidence through strong reporting, transparent communication, and high‑quality financial governance will be essential.

Key early priorities will include:

  • Driving the delivery of a sustainable break‑even plan, ensuring it is realistic, achievable, and progressing in line with NHSE expectations.
  • Strengthening financial governance across the organisation, embedding robust controls, compliant processes, and clear lines of accountability

This is an opportunity for an experienced leader to make a significant impact, stabilising the financial position of the Trust while supporting long‑term sustainability and improvement.

What They are Looking For
Success in this role will be underpinned by:

  • Deep NHS finance expertise and technical credibility
  • A calm, measured leadership style grounded in sound judgement
  • The authority and interpersonal impact to engage effectively at Board level
  • Strong attention to detail, and the ability to instil assurance across the organisation
  • The dynamism to support improvement in a complex and pressured environment
