This is an opportunity to lead one of the most high-profile portfolios in local government – a role that shapes the everyday experience of hundreds of thousands of residents, businesses, and visitors.

Essential duties

As Interim Director of Environment, you will take strategic responsibility for a diverse range of services that are fundamental to the quality of life in our clients communities.

A diverse portfolio which includes; highways and traffic management, waste and recycling, environmental health, parking, and the stewardship of  over 100 parks and open spaces.

This is a role that demands vision, resilience, and a relentless focus on delivery.

You will lead a directorate of five key service areas, managing a gross expenditure budget of around £100m and a workforce committed to delivering high-quality, resident-focused services.

Your remit will include:

  • Driving innovation and efficiency across universal services such as waste management, street cleaning, and enforcement.
  • Leading the council’s approach to climate change and net zero, influencing policy and attracting investment to meet ambitious sustainability goals.
  • Ensuring the safe and sustainable management of highways, traffic systems, and flood authority responsibilities.
  • Overseeing complex regulatory services and championing community engagement to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Experience required

This is a role for a strategic leader who combines operational excellence with the ability to inspire cultural change.

You will bring:

  • Significant senior leadership experience in a comparable setting (single tier authority), with expertise across highways, environmental services, waste, and regulatory functions.
  • A proven track record of delivering transformation, embedding performance improvement, and achieving financial sustainability.
  • Political acumen and the ability to build trusted relationships with elected members, partners, and communities.
  • A commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring services reflect and respond to the needs of all residents.
