The Thames Estuary is the UK’s most important waterway with a rich cultural and economic heritage, important natural landscapes and a tremendous potential to deliver growth for the benefit of local communities and support the success of the whole of the UK economy. Covering east London, north Kent and south Essex, the scale is comparable to the Midlands Engine, Northern Powerhouse and Oxford-Cambridge arc. It is envisioned that the Thames Estuary will be a tapestry of productive places along a global river, creating 1.3 million new jobs and generating £190 billion additional gross value by 2050.

To realise this ambition, the Estuary will require a clear vison underpinned by a coordinated delivery plan and stronger more streamlined governance via a new Thames Estuary Growth Board. A key part of this will be to establish the Estuary as a compelling inward investment location.  The Board will help stimulate growth in the regional economy through shaping the vision and driving priorities for the Estuary with key stakeholders. It will be a voluntary partnership between local authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships, universities, businesses and civil society, reflecting the businesses and communities it serves.

The Estuary Envoy will chair the Thames Estuary Growth Board and lead it through its formative stages, setting the strategic direction and overseeing the delivery of a work programme as well as creating a diverse board. The Envoy will be the voice of the Estuary, forging positive relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders and acting as both an advocate and ambassador for the region.

To succeed in this role, you will have an established leadership profile, strategic vision and experience of operating within complex multi-organisational governance structures. You will need to demonstrate how you can engage effectively across Government departments with both ministers and senior officials. With strong board experience, you will be an excellent communicator and public speaker possessing the personal impact and influencing skills to be the public face for the region and to build consensus amongst a diverse board and stakeholder group.
