Birmingham Museums Trust (BMT) is the largest independent museums trust in the UK, responsible for an extraordinary collection of over one million objects and nine museum sites across the city. From the iconic Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery to Thinktank, our science museum, we are a vital cultural force, telling the stories of Birmingham’s people and shaping the city’s future through creativity, education, and inclusion.

We are seeking a new Chair to lead our Board of Trustees at a pivotal moment in our journey. With a renewed focus on community engagement, sustainability, and digital innovation, this is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of one of the UK’s most important cultural institutions in a radical transformation to become a symbol of hope, social trust, and belonging.

As Chair, you will bring strategic vision, inclusive leadership, and a deep commitment to public service. You will work closely with the Co-Chief Executives and Board of Trustees to ensure strong governance, champion our mission, and support our ambitious plans for growth and transformation. You will be a compelling advocate for the Trust, building relationships across the city and beyond, and helping us to secure the partnerships and resources we need to thrive.

We are looking for an individual with:

  • A strong track record of leadership at Board level, ideally as Chair or Trustee
  • A passion for arts, culture, and heritage, and a commitment to Birmingham’s diverse communities
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • The ability to inspire, challenge, and support a high-performing senior leadership team
  • A commitment to inclusive governance and ethical leadership

This is a high-profile and rewarding role for someone who shares our belief in the power of museums to inspire, educate, and connect. If you are excited by the opportunity to lead a dynamic and evolving organisation at the heart of one of the UK’s most vibrant cities, we would love to hear from you.
