Our Insight Programme launches in the North East

Earlier this month, we ran our latest induction session for participants on the Insight Programme, GatenbySanderson’s development programme for aspiring Non-Executive Directors from under-represented groups.

The Insight Programme was developed in response to the challenge to build more diverse non-executive Boards in the Health sector, that are truly representative of the communities they serve; targeted to under-represented groups, the programme has contributed to building diverse talent pipelines and empowering these communities. The programme is run in partnership with Trusts across England, and deliver by GatenbySanderson, sponsoring Trusts and individual participants pro bono.

Since 2016, the programme has supported over 50 participants, enabling them to build their knowledge of the complex governance in the sector and their confidence operating at a non-executive level.

We were delighted to launch the programme in the North East with a range of sponsors signed up from across the NHS in the region. The induction was kindly hosted by Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and we had a number of exceptional speakers at the event including;

• Sir John Burn, Chair of the Board at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals, who shared his considerable experience of governance and the expectations of Non-Executive Directors in the NHS

 Catherine Young, Non-Executive Director for North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, who talked about her journey to the role and the day-to-day experience of a NED

• Professor Kath McCourt, Non-Executive Director at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals, also joined the group to share her thoughts and experience.

Robin Staveley, GatenbySanderson’s Health Practice Lead, said;

The Insight Programme is critical to ensuring that there is a diverse, Board-ready group of individuals available to our partners across the NHS by encouraging, supporting and nurturing talent from those whose backgrounds have been traditionally underrepresented at this level.

We are delighted to be running our first programme in the North East and have been impressed both by the support we’ve received from Trusts and the high quality of individuals interested in participating in the programme. We were joined for induction by some exceptionally experienced and credible non-executives in the region and I’d like to take this opportunity to offer my personal thanks to Sir John, Catherine and Kath for sharing their considerable knowledge and experience with the group.

Participants will now be selected by sponsor Trusts for a placement within their organisation, where they will benefit from direct exposure to the workings of an NHS Board, and its sub-committees, as well as mentoring from the Chair and a buddying relationship with an experienced Non-Executive Director.
