Across the UK, higher education is evolving. Universities are navigating complex challenges, and financial pressures. But amid this transformation, there is a rise of experienced, values-driven leaders ready to shape the sector’s future in new and flexible ways.
A Quiet Shift in Leadership
Many universities have introduced voluntary severance (VS) schemes as part of broader strategic realignments. While these programmes are often seen through the lens of cost-saving, they also mark a significant transition point for senior leaders, many of whom are choosing to step away from permanent roles, not out of necessity, but out of a desire for change.
In conversations I’ve had with senior leaders across the sector, a clear theme is emerging: this isn’t the end of their journey, it’s a pivot. These are individuals with deep institutional knowledge, a passion for education, and a desire to lead with purpose. They’re not stepping back; they’re stepping into something new.
Burnout or Breakthrough?
It’s no secret that the past few years have been demanding. The cumulative impact of crisis management, budget constraints, and constant restructuring has left many leaders feeling stretched. But for some, this moment is also a chance to reset, to reflect on what kind of leadership they want to offer next.
Rather than seeing this as a loss of talent, we can view it as a redistribution of expertise. Leaders are seeking roles where they can make a difference without the long-term pressures of permanent posts. They want to build, not just manage. They want to hire, not cut. They want to lead with clarity, not crisis.
The Rise of Interim Leadership
Interim roles offer a unique opportunity for both institutions and individuals. For universities, they provide access to seasoned professionals who can step in quickly, bring fresh perspective, and drive change. For leaders, they offer flexibility, purpose, and the chance to contribute meaningfully, without the burnout.
While the market continues to be challenging, we’re seeing a growing appetite for this model. Institutions are recognising the value of agile, emotionally intelligent leadership during times of transition. And leaders are discovering that interim roles allow them to stay connected to the sector they care about, while working in a way that aligns with their values and energy.
Let’s Talk About What’s Next
If you’re a senior leader who has recently accepted a voluntary severance package, or are considering your next move, I’d love to have a conversation.
There is a wealth of talent in the sector right now. People who still have so much to offer. Interim leadership could be your next chapter, a way to lead with impact, on your terms.
