The Science Museum Group is home to 6 sites and we hold the most significant collection of science, technology, engineering, media and medicine anywhere in the world. We inspire millions of visitors and learners each year; on site (5 million visitor), online and through our partnerships. Digital is central to how we connect people with our mission, now and into the future.

We are seeking an outstanding Chief Digital Officer (CDO) to lead our digital vision and strategy. This is a pivotal executive leadership role, shaping the Science Museum Groups  digital transformation and ensuring our museums remain at the forefront of innovation and engagement.

The Role

As CDO, you will:

  • Provide inspirational leadership for SMG’s digital ambitions, contributing to Group-wide strategy at Executive level.
  • You will be the Lead Executive on the Digital Advisory Board, working with Trustees and external experts to deliver our Digital Strategy to 2030.
  • Be an ‘AI Evangelist’ and drive innovation in AI, digital engagement and interactive experiences across our sites, developing monetizable digital assets and expanding online access to collections.
  • Champion digital literacy and transformation across SMG, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and inclusivity.
  • Lead investment in secure, sustainable technologies that enhance business processes, data insights and revenue growth.
  • Build strong relationships with funders, partners, stakeholders and colleagues to position SMG as a global digital leader.
  • Actively contribute to SMG’s Data, Planning and Insight work and work with subject matter experts to harmonise and link datasets Group-wide.
  • Lead, inspire and develop a high-performing, diverse digital team.

About You

We are looking for a proven digital leader who can combine strategic vision with delivery at scale. You will bring:

  • A track record of technology-led transformation in a complex organisation.
  • Experience of managing large, integrated digital estates and content-rich platforms.
  • Strong understanding of how digital, data and online platforms can deepen engagement with audiences.
  • Exceptional influencing and communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical experts and senior stakeholders.
  • Inspirational leadership style, with a passion for collaboration, inclusion and innovation.
