Interim Finance Director

9-month Fixed-Term Contract

Start: April

We are partnering with a high-profile national public institution to appoint an experienced Interim Finance Director. This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in a complex, high‑impact public sector environment, leading a finance function at the heart of a nationally significant organisation.


The Role

The Finance Director is a key member of the Management Board and holds strategic responsibility for the organisation’s financial planning and performance.

You will:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Finance Department.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality financial services, driving continuous improvement and digital transformation.
  • Advise senior stakeholders on complex financial matters, supporting effective decision-making.
  • Contribute fully as a member of the Management Board.
  • Oversee robust financial planning and management, ensuring timely, accurate and meaningful financial information.
  • Integrate financial planning with wider business planning, collaborating closely with the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Promote value for money and effective cost control across the organisation.
  • Lead the preparation of timely, accurate annual accounts.
  • Foster strong, collaborative relationships across departments.
  • Maintain effective systems of internal control, ensuring financial propriety, including counter-fraud and anti-bribery measures.
  • Act as the owner of the organisation’s corporate finance risk.


The Person

You will bring:

  • Professional qualification with one of the CCAB bodies (or equivalent).
  • Extensive senior-level financial management experience within the public sector, with a deep understanding of public finance frameworks, regulation, and operational realities.
  • A strong track record of leadership within complex public-sector organisations, including:
    • Contributing effectively as part of a senior leadership team to shape and deliver strategic objectives.
    • Leading, developing and motivating high-performing finance teams.
    • Delivering effective, organisation‑wide financial management.
    • Successfully leading transformational change in systems, processes, and culture within a multi‑stakeholder environment.
  • Outstanding communication and influencing skills, with sound political awareness and the ability to navigate ambiguity.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex information quickly, identify key issues, and communicate insights clearly to both financial and non‑financial audiences.
  • The ability to balance technical expertise with strategic perspective, seeing the broader organisational context.
