The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) is a national organisation delivering critical national systems and services that support the health and care system across the UK. From managing NHS prescriptions and dental services to supporting workforce and digital transformation, our work touches the lives of millions. With more than 5,000 dedicated colleagues and managing over £100 billion in spend, NHSBSA plays a pivotal role in ensuring the NHS operates efficiently, transparently and sustainably

Data and AI are now among the top strategic priorities for the organisation as NHSBSA becomes even more data driven to make better decisions for the health and social care system. With strong executive sponsorship, a clear mandate and an established Data & Analytics capability, NHSBSA is creating a new, dedicated AI function to help deliver measurable value, support the NHS 10-Year Digital Plan, and build a future-ready workforce.

The opportunity

This is an opportunity to shape the technical foundations of AI across a complex, high trust public organisation, designing architecture that enables AI to move safely and confidently from experimentation into production.

As Senior AI Architect, you will be the technical authority for AI and GenAI architecture across NHSBSA. You will design and evolve enterprise grade AI and ML systems and platforms, ensuring scalability, strong data foundations and alignment with enterprise standards.

Working closely with the AI Lead and wider Data and AI teams, you will define architectural patterns, deployment standards and lifecycle management approaches. You will embed MLOps, CI/CD and observability from the outset, ensuring AI solutions are secure, explainable and compliant.

Operating across cloud environments including Azure and AWS, you will ensure structured data is translated into high value, production ready AI capability. This is a hands on role for someone who enjoys solving complex architectural challenges while mentoring others and raising technical maturity. You may come from technology vendors, consulting, scale ups, private equity backed firms or other regulated sectors, but you will share a commitment to responsible innovation and public impact.

Could this be you?

What you will bring/Essential Criteria

We do not expect candidates to meet every criterion in full. If you bring relevant experience, transferable capability and the motivation to deliver impact in this role, we would welcome your application. We are looking for a leader who can bring:

  • AI architecture: Proven hands on experience designing and supporting AI and ML systems in live environments, including model lifecycle management.
  • Data platform and cloud expertise: Strong capability architecting AI within large scale data platforms and cloud environments, including MLOps and deployment pipelines.
  • Applied GenAI experience: Practical experience working with modern GenAI approaches such as LLMs, RAG, vector databases and orchestration frameworks beyond proof of concept.
  • Governance and secure design: Proven ability to design AI systems that are secure, explainable and aligned with ethical and regulatory standards.
  • Technical leadership and collaboration: Strong capability leading technical work, mentoring others and collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Applications should be submitted no later than Thursday 5th March at 09:00.
