About Birmingham Museums Trust

Birmingham Museums Trust (BMT) is the UK’s largest independent museums trust, responsible for nine museum sites and over one million objects that showcase Birmingham’s rich and diverse heritage. From the iconic Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery to Thinktank, our science museum, we are a vital cultural presence in the city and beyond. We are entering a pivotal phase, with the phased reopening of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and a renewed focus on community engagement, sustainability, and digital innovation. This is an exciting time to join our Board and help shape the future of one of the UK’s most significant cultural institutions.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our Board of Trustees in the following role:

Chair of the Finance & Risk Committee

You will bring financial acumen and strategic oversight to ensure BMT remains financially sustainable and resilient. Working closely with the Chair, Co-CEOs, and Chief Financial Officer, you will lead the Finance & Risk Committee and provide governance across financial planning, risk management, and compliance.

This role is central to BMT’s ambition to be a financially robust, commercially agile, and culturally inclusive organisation.

Who We’re Looking For

Finance & Risk Chair

- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
- Executive-level experience in Finance or Audit
- Strategic financial planning and risk oversight
- Experience mentoring senior colleagues
- Trustee or non-executive experience is desirable

For this role, a passion for Birmingham’s heritage and a commitment to BMT’s values is essential.

Board Engagement

Trustees attend four to five Board meetings annually. Subcommittee meetings are held separately, and Chairs are expected to lead and shape these forums. There will also be occasional additional evening events such as exhibition launches.

Join Us

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to Birmingham’s cultural legacy and help steer a major institution through a period of transformation and growth. If you are motivated by purpose, impact, and collaboration, we would love to hear from you.
