The Department for Transport (DfT) is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as its next Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA). This is a unique opportunity to lead the department’s science, technology, and innovation agenda at a time when transport is central to delivering the UK’s most pressing priorities—from economic growth and national security to decarbonisation and digital transformation.

As CSA, you will sit at the heart of DfT’s leadership, advising Ministers, the Permanent Secretary, and senior officials. You will ensure that robust, people-centred science and engineering evidence informs policy and delivery across the department. You will also lead the implementation of the DfT Science, Innovation and Technology (SIT) Plan, and represent the department in the cross-government CSA network. As Head of Profession for Science and Engineering, you will also lead the development of DfT’s scientific capability and its professional community.

We are looking for a candidate with an internationally recognised reputation in science, technology, or engineering, and a strong track record of leading major research and development portfolios. You will have experience influencing senior stakeholders across government, academia, and industry, and be confident operating in politically sensitive, high-profile environments. A clear and persuasive communicator, you will convey complex scientific advice to Ministers, officials, and the public, and advocate effectively within and beyond government. You will be a collaborative leader, skilled at building cross-sector relationships and offering authoritative insight across diverse scientific fields.

This is a high-profile, high-impact role that offers the opportunity to shape national policy, influence the UK’s research and innovation landscape, and work at the intersection of science, society, and government.

If you are ready to bring your expertise to one of the most influential science leadership roles in government, we would be delighted to hear from you.

This is a three-year fixed term appointment with the possibility of extension and with flexible working arrangements available. Secondments and job share applications are welcomed.
