Durham University is founded on philanthropy, established through a generous gift by Bishop van Mildert in 1832 that included Durham Castle and much of the land and buildings we still occupy today. Since then the loyalty and generosity of the friends of the University have factored in establishing Durham as one of the very best universities in the UK.

Building on this history, the University is now seeking a Director of Advancement and Communications to oversee an ambitious Advancement strategy that will help secure our financial future and achieve the global awareness that the University deserves. This is a new leadership role for Durham.

You will bring demonstrated leadership experience across the Advancement portfolios of Development and Alumni Relations and/or Marketing and Communications. You will have proven leadership experience of working with internal and external senior stakeholders. You will have proven experience working in an international context and can demonstrate how you developed and implemented a strategy that had significant financial gains for your organisation. 

The post holder must have an affinity for higher education and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing higher education. You will work especially closely with the Pro Vice-Chancellor Global in shaping the University marketing, communications, policy engagement and fund-raising policies and setting a strategic direction for fundraising and alumni relations. You will create and oversee plans for the support of alumni relations and development efforts in Colleges and Departments.

You will lead strategic planning for Advancement, working closely with peers and stakeholders across the University. You will be an inspirational leader who brings demonstrable experience of empowering teams to achieve challenging goals. Internal communication and influence will be a strength and you can show how your strategic inputs have made significant impacts on your organisation.
