The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) is the leading improvement agency for the care and support sector in the UK, and an independent charity.  Unambiguously vision and values led, we identify and share knowledge about what works, and help the sector to put that knowledge into practice. We are a key partner for the Department of Health, work with the Department of Education and deliver training, consultancy, research and evaluation projects throughout England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.  Our client base for our commercial work continues to feature local authority and health organisations but has expanded to include organisations as diverse as JP Morgan social responsibility arm, the Church of England, and large independent sector providers 

We are at a critical point in our evolution.  Our Board and Executive Team have together mapped out an ambitious development programme which aims to support SCIE’s evolution into a more entrepreneurial business, with a higher proportion of commercial income.  Based on our solid and respected foundations, we are seeking new income streams building a sustainable business for the future.  This represents a significant cultural and organisational challenge for SCIE, but one which we are passionate about and are well on the way to achieving.

Our current Chair, Lord Bichard, is stepping down after four years and we are consequently looking for a new chair to take on this critical leadership role during a time of increasing focus on the social care sector.  This is a high profile public role where your visible leadership, enthusiasm and drive will help us make a significant impact on the lives of many.

You will have skills and experience of chairing an organisation or complex project or initiative, and a strategic leader with a track record of success. Politically and commercially astute, you will be committed to working in partnership with people who use, commission and deliver care.  If you are passionate about leading an organisation committed to better experiences and outcomes for people who require care and support to live fulfilling lives, and want to help us build our profile and business, then we are keen to hear from you.  

This is a significant role that will involve a commitment of around one to two days per week maximum
