Newham is an exciting, ambitious and diverse borough in East London, and we are one of the fastest growing, young and diverse boroughs in the country. Nearly three quarters of our residents are from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse communities and over 100 languages are spoken in the borough.

Newham is becoming the place to work and invest. There are high levels of transport connectivity with Stratford the busiest station in the UK and home to the new Elizabeth Line. Newham hosts major business districts including Stratford, home to global institutions such as the BBC, V&A and University College London. We are also home to innovation hubs like Here East and the Royal Docks, London’s only Enterprise Zone. Newham is uniquely located at the axis between the Thames Estuary Production Corridor and the UK’s Innovation Corridor. These have helped Newham have the third highest rate of jobs growth in London.

This is an exciting and rare opportunity to become the Independent Chair of our Newham Safeguarding Adults Board (NSAB). In this role you will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of valued stakeholders, including the Local Safeguarding Children's Partnership, the Community Safety Partnership, and the Integrated Care System, making a lasting impact on our community.

Whilst we have made great strides in promoting jobs growth and tackling deprivation in Newham, there is still much to do. Over a quarter of our neighbourhoods are in the 20% of most deprived neighbourhoods in the country. Over a quarter of our residents are paid below the London Living wage. After housing costs, almost half of our residents live in poverty. Our average rents represent 65% of average wages compared to 30% across the UK.

You will be innovative, confident, and consistent in providing independent advice, support and constructive challenges to NSAB partners and organisations, to optimise the safety, wellbeing and quality of life for our residents.

In this role, you will:

  • Use your skills and knowledge to ensure NSAB fulfils its statutory requirements as outlined in the Care Act 2014, sharing best practice, legislation, statutory guidance and local policies and procedures related to safeguarding adults.
  • Effectively chair NSAB and complex partnership meetings.
  • Engage adults with care and support needs, carers, their families and advocates, to ensure their voices are central to NSAB’s activity.
  • Communicate clearly and succinctly verbally and in writing.
  • Produce NSAB’s Strategic Plan and Annual Report.
  • Coordinate NSAB activity across other strategic boards and forums.
  • Ensure learning from Safeguarding Adult Reviews, Children’s Partnership Reviews, LeDeR, Domestic Homicide Reviews, Coroner outcomes and any other reviews are embedded locally and underpin developments.
  • Ensure that key issues and national developments are brought to the attention of and considered by NSAB.
  • Bring people together to work collaboratively in a high support/ high challenge environment.

To be successful in this role you will use your expertise to guide our team towards achieving our objectives effectively, drive forward the work of NSAB, bringing energy, enthusiasm, and innovative ideas to the table. Your strategic vision will shape our initiatives and propel us towards success.

Join us in reshaping the future of safeguarding adults in Newham. Apply today and bring your unique perspective and expertise to the table.
