Outstanding Care, Together

With over 9,000 dedicated staff caring for patients around the clock, St. George’s is the largest healthcare provider in South West London, and one of the biggest and busiest hospital Trusts in London. It provides services out of two main hospital sites, St George’s Hospital in Tooting and Queen Mary Hospital in Roehampton, as well as health centres in Wandsworth and Merton.

St George’s Hospital is one of the country’s principal teaching hospitals, as well as being a leading research institution which works in close partnership with St George’s University of London medical school. One of London’s four major trauma centres, the Trust is also a leading children’s hospital as well as a major centre for cancer and neurosciences offering patients innovative new treatments such as the country’s first 24/7 mechanical thrombectomy service. The Trust provides these services to over 3.5 million people, whilst providing a wider range of acute secondary care services to 1.3 million people across South West London. It is a key part of the South West London Integrated Care System and the South West London Acute Provider Collaborative, which have fostered a significant increase in partnership working to improve outcomes for local communities.

Since February 2022, St George’s has been part of a new hospital group with Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. Working as a group enables more joined-up decision-making for the benefit of local people, a larger and more resilient workforce, reduced variation in levels of care, and more access to a wider range of services to our patients. While both Trusts remain separate legal entities, they are committed to working together increasingly collaboratively. The Trusts share a Chairman and Group Chief Executive and are led by a single Executive team. Over the past year, a number of Board Committees (Quality, Finance and People) have met as Committees-in-Common across the Group, and from May 2023 the two Boards of Directors will meet as a Group Board. The Trusts have also recently agreed a new strategy for the Group, which sets out the Trusts’ shared ambitions for 2023-2028 of delivering Outstanding Care, Together, and this will be launched in May 2023.

We are now looking for an experienced commercial leader to join our board as a Non-Executive Director. You will have substantial experience of working in a large and complex organisation at Board level and have experience of leading transformative change. Candidates with a background in strategic people management would be of particular interest. We need someone who understands how to seek effective assurance as well as working as a collaborative member of the unitary Board in holding the Executive to account to ensure that we deliver outstanding care for those who use our services. We are especially keen to encourage candidates from underrepresented communities to apply.
