This role can be based in any of the following DWP Hub locations: This role can be located at any of the following PC and P Group hub locations – Birmingham (Arena Central), Blackpool (Peel Park), Cardiff (Ty Taf), Glasgow (Atlantic Quay), Leeds (Quarry House), London (Caxton House), Manchester (St. Peter's Square), Newcastle (Benton Park View), Sheffield (Kings Court). ​Regular travel to London and other DWP offices is required.

The role of Deputy Director, Health and Safety (People) is a fantastic opportunity to provide strategic Health and Safety leadership at scale, right at the heart of the Department. Our people are essential to the delivery of our services, and this role will lead on the wide range of strategic and operational people-related Health and Safety issues that exist and emerge in a people focused Department of over 85,000 staff and with public facing service delivery locations across the UK. 

Leading a team of 112 colleagues, you will be our competent person for health and safety, leading our National Health and Safety Team, with responsibility for setting and driving the delivery of our Health and Safety strategy – Working Safely. As our Health and Safety champion, passion is also essential, and we will look to you to bring this in ensuring we have a positive safety culture. You will work closely with our Estates Health and Safety lead. 

We are looking for professionally qualified candidates who can bring a track record of strategic and expert Health and Safety leadership, at pace and scale in a large complex organisation. You will be able to build highly effective, trust-based and influential stakeholder relationships, be a persuasive enthusiastic communicator across complex topics, a wide variety of media, and to large and small groups, bringing credibility and confidence. People leadership is also key, and you will need to bring experience of developing high-performing geographically dispersed and diverse teams. 

This role provides a unique opportunity to work through the big strategic questions arising for health and safety on future skills, flexibility, inclusion, workforce, workplaces of the future, hybrid working and future estates.
