West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS FT serves a population of 5.6 million people covering an area of more than 5,000 square miles made up of Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Coventry, Birmingham and Black Country conurbation. The West Midlands is a hugely diverse area and covers the second largest urban area in the country (Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country) while over 80% of the area is rural. We are also the second most ethnically diverse region in the country after London. With approximately 7000 staff we serve the population from our 15 preparation hubs across the region, responding to around 4000 ‘999’ calls every day, as well as providing almost 1 million non-emergency patient journeys each year.

We are a fast paced and ambitious organisation, with a reputation for delivering high quality services, which includes being the UK’s only CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated ambulance service. As we continue to evolve and progress as an organisation, we have an exciting opportunity for a talented individual to join our Board as the Director of Performance and Improvement, which is a newly created role in our executive team. As well as having corporate responsibility for the leadership of the Trust as a key member of the Board of Directors, this role will also have strategic and operational responsibility of our urgent, emergency and non-emergency services, ensuring the continued provision of high quality, safe and sustainable patient care.

You will be a registered Paramedic, with extensive and successful operational delivery experience and a deep understanding of the ambulance sector. A skilled communicator and natural team player, you will have a demonstrable track record of delivering strategic programmes of work in partnership with a range of stakeholders and be adept at influencing both with an organisation and externally across the health and social care landscape. Most of all, you will share our values, be committed to developing a diverse and inclusive organisation and be focussed on continuous improvement and innovation as we strive to deliver outstanding excellence to the communities we serve.

West Midlands Ambulance Service positively welcomes diversity and aims to be a truly inclusive place to work. We are looking for self-motivated, enthusiastic people from all backgrounds that care about making a difference. The Trust is currently under-represented in terms of people from BME backgrounds and welcomes applicants from these communities. Selection will be on a basis of merit. The Trust has achieved the status of a Disability Confident Leader and guarantees to invite to assessment applicants who meet the criteria for the job vacancy. To ensure the diversity of the workforce and understand the differing needs of our communities, the Trust is committed to the principles of Positive Action. The Trust is proud to support our Armed Forces community and have signed up to the Step Into Health initiative. We welcome applications from Armed Forces Veterans and Service leavers.
