At the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO), we provide a free national service for citizens with unresolved complaints, making final decisions on complaints that have not been solved by the NHS in England, UK government departments and some UK public organisations. To this end, we operate with substantial influence to address injustice and inequality, working with independence and impartiality, to hold institutions and organisations to account, to right individual wrongs. With a holistic view of the public service landscape, we are in a unique position to identify and respond to recurrent issues, and our work frequently leads to systemic change that makes organisations, and people’s experience of them, better.

Increasingly visible and active in the international Ombudsman community, we are well on the way to becoming an exemplary Ombudsman service, clear in our values of Independence, Fairness, Excellence and Transparency. We have taken significant strides forward in resolving challenging cases, producing influential policy reports that are taken seriously by Parliament, and restoring the trust of stakeholders. We have a strong voice and we have reported on a range of issues, from the impact of Windrush, to HS2, to State Pension age communications. Our work is societally important.

There is much to be done as we embark on delivering an ambitious new 3-year strategy. It is imperative that we continue to raise the profile of the service, finding more effective ways of engaging vulnerable, disadvantaged communities to ensure that we support those most in need. We need to add to the diversity and inclusiveness of our teams at all levels of operation and oversight so that our own people reflect the communities we seek to serve, and we must operate with maximum efficiency, so that our energies can be directed to where they are needed most.

We are looking for a Director of Resources to bring inspirational leadership to a high performing team of Finance, People and Talent, ICT and Accommodation professionals. As a member of the Executive Team, this is a key leadership role, sitting at the heart of PHSO, influencing its strategic direction, supporting the leadership of the organisation, and driving the transformational change and service improvements needed to enable PHSO to realise its ambitions.

Already working at director level within a public service environment, you will have a successful and strong track record of authentic senior leadership in at least one of the portfolio disciplines for this position. You will bring outstanding interpersonal skills, together with the ability to motivate and further develop a diverse and multi-functional team and will be capable of leading inclusive strategic thinking and influencing sustainable change and impact on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.You will be commercially and politically astute, with outstanding relationship-building and communication skills and will bring the insight, analytical ability, strategic vision and determination to get things done, in this uniquely Interesting and demanding role.
