Making Space puts wellbeing at the heart of health and social care and has spent over 40 years helping adults with care and support needs, and their carers, to lead independent and fulfilling lives. They provide services from Cumbria to Cambridge, supporting people in their own home, in their local community and with specialist support services. Their services are offered to any adult with an identified health or social care need, including people with complex mental health needs, learning disabilities, living with dementia as well as older people and carers.

Over its impressive history, Making Space has grown from a £25,000 per year group focused solely on mental health, to a complex, multi-million-pound organisation, with over 1,000 employees and volunteers delivering innovative, personalised services across the whole spectrum of health and social care. Across residential and nursing homes, supported living and extra care, floating support, independent hospitals, community support and social inclusion, employment and wellbeing, and psychological therapies, Making Space’s professional and caring teams strive to go above and beyond for the people they support, helping them to live happy, fulfilling and enriched lives. Everything is done with dignity, respect and compassion for both the people they support and their families.

With Making Space’s current Chair stepping down this summer, they are seeking an experienced Chair to join the team, providing clear leadership to and development of the Board of Trustees and senior team. Politically astute, the Chair will be able to grasp relevant issues and understand the relationships between interested commissioning bodies and the national policy drivers that impact upon the Charity, as well as demonstrating a broad understanding of the work of social care and health service systems. The Chair’s entrepreneurial spirit will bring both commercial and service evolution ideas to the organisation, with the capacity to support new forms of income generation and embed innovation and excellence across all parts of the organisation.

Crucially, the Chair will help Making Space live its values of Kind Hearts, Tailor Making, Dreaming Big, Being Ready and Having Courage and deliver on its ambitious strategy. With effective interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy, the Chair will guide the Board of Trustees with impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences. This appointment is a unique opportunity for a passionate and committed individual to make a huge impact for Making Space, their staff and their service users.
