Why the University of Derby?

University of Derby, which is recognised by Times Higher Education as one of the top 250 young universities in the world. At Derby, we have long established ourselves as a powerful regional university, and now see our profile and influence continue to grow at pace nationally and internationally. We have a reputation for delivering excellence in learning and teaching, underpinned by practical, applied research, knowledge exchange, innovation and skills activity which impacts directly on society, industry, and the environment. Our 2018-2030 Strategic Framework, launched in June 2018, signalled a new chapter for our university. It has provided staff and stakeholders with clarity over our direction of travel and raised the bar in terms of our institutional ambitions. These ambitions include significant investment in the new Derby Business School, due to open in September 2024, as the first phase of an extensive city development plan which will firmly establish Derby as a University destination of choice for students and staff.

Role Specific

Reporting to the Chief Finance and Commercial Officer, this entirely new role has been created following a significant investment by the University to transform how procurement and commercial activity is performed. The Vice Chancellor and the Executive team have instigated this change as part of their transformation journey and have invested in creating this new post to lead the transformation and to introduce a business partner approach.

You will lead a newly created team to deliver our procurement vision to maximise the value and outcomes from our significant investment programme and our on-going £40m supplier spend, developing a commercially focused, responsible, and sustainable procurement approach across the University.

In addition to leading our procurement journey the role will also lead the development of our non-academic commercial offering to maximise our income and work on future commercial structures such as joint ventures.

You will be ambitious and have excellent relationship building skills and bring experience of working within a complex environment at a senior level with professional knowledge of Procurement and a strong commercial acumen.
