South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) provides a range of emergency, urgent care and non-emergency healthcare services, along with commercial logistics services. The Trust delivers most of these services to the populations of the South Central region – Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire – as well as non-emergency patient transport services in Surrey and Sussex, and a dental service (accessed via NHS 111) in parts of Dorset.

SCAS is a monopoly provider of 999 emergency ambulance services within the South Central region; all other services the Trust delivers are tendered for on a competitive basis. With the expansion into Surrey and Sussex, SCAS now serves a population of more than seven million people across the six counties.

With a committed workforce of over 4,000 staff, together with more than 1,200 volunteers, we operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As an innovative ambulance service, we have adapted over the last five years to deliver a “Good” Care Quality Commission rating while developing and delivering a range of services to support integrated urgent care.  In this respect we consider ourselves to be a ‘care navigator’ easing access to care for patients and enabling a seamless link between providers and we are an NHS provider that prides itself on workforce and organisational development and recognise our staff as our core asset. 

As our Chief Finance Officer you will help us deliver a sustainable financial performance, achieve an underlying break-even and maintain a strong cash position throughout the delivery of our new Trust corporate strategy over the next five years and beyond. Our history of innovation has recognised the need to adapt.  We, alongside the wider NHS, are facing a number of fundamental challenges as we  continue to respond to the challenges of Covid, recover services, adapt to changing health needs and preferences, changes in treatments, technology and care delivery. At the same time, the cost of continuing to provide services outstrips the funding available. 

As an Executive Director you will be a full voting member of the Trust Board and expected to contribute and fully engage in the strategic direction, performance management and governance of the Trust. As the professional finance lead for the Trust you will be responsible for providing strategic financial leadership and advice to the Board of Directors and the wider Trust.  You will also be the Executive lead for Estates, Procurement and Sustainability.

As well as ensuring effective stewardship of resources in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements and guidelines you will provide the Trust with the internal capacity to robustly monitor, in year, our financial performance ensuring we meets all financial targets and requirements. Ultimately you will be responsible for ensuring a proactive management approach, to ensure that the Trust operates to best practice financial management standard, maximising value for money and use of resources within the well-led framework policy framework. 

We are looking for a senior finance leader, with experience of leading the finance function in a highly regulated environment of comparable complexity. You don’t need to have worked in the NHS, but passion for our work is a must, as well as alignment with our core values; Teamwork, Innovation, Professionalism and Caring.
