Kent is an ambitious and highly influential county and a key part of the UK economy.  With the largest population of the English counties, over 450,000 of the 1.5 million people living in Kent are under 25. We are committed to giving Kent’s children the best start in life by ensuring that children and their families get the right help and support when they need it and that every young person in Kent gets the education, skills, and experiences they need for a successful future.

Corporate Director for Children, Young People and Education | Attractive package

With the retirement of our current Corporate Director, this is an exciting time to join the corporate leadership team at Kent County Council, taking on the biggest DCS role in the country. We have solid foundations to build upon, with our Children’s Services rated as ‘Good’, a high performing education system, and improving SEND service. There is a stable and experienced leadership team to work with, and strong member commitment to early help, social work and education services

Whilst the landscape in which we deliver our services is large and complex, we benefit from having good partnerships for you to grow and develop, strengthened by the work we have done together during the pandemic. In the future, we see even more opportunity to work more closely with partners, especially those within the health sector following their changes in structures and governance, and further developing relationships with schools and trusts following the imminent White Paper .

As well as delivering all the statutory responsibilities to the highest standards as our DCS, you will also play a critical role as a leader within Kent, contributing significantly to the corporate and strategic aims of the authority. This is a true corporate leadership role, that will shape the services received by our residents and communities for decades to come. As our Corporate Director, you will champion the interests of parents, families and vulnerable children and young people across all related services as well as promoting education excellence and developing school improvement strategies to support local schools.

As a leader within Children’s Services, ambitious to take on the biggest position in the sector and motivated by the size and scale of this role, you will be able to demonstrate the delivery of positive outcomes in a large, complex organisation.

Your excellent knowledge and understanding of the statutory requirements for the services you will lead, and. experience of delivering services during times of transformational change.  will engender trust and credibility with staff, stakeholders, and partners alike. You will be able to establish positive relationships at all levels within, and outside, the organisation.
