The appointment of our next Chief Executive will be made at a critical and important time for the sector we serve. The Grenfell Tower Inquiry continues to shed light on fundamental shortcomings and systemic public safety issues in the UK construction industry, and the new Building Safety Bill will inevitably impact construction’s regulatory and operational landscape for the better. We have a unique and practical role to play in supporting such change, as the sector builds back following the Covid-19 pandemic.

At CSCS, we help to improve standards and safety on UK sites, through enabling construction players to prove that individuals working on sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do. Owned by industry and trade unions and run as a not-for- profit company, CSCS is the largest of 38 card schemes operating in the UK construction industry. All schemes are authorised to use the CSCS logo under license, and all schemes participate in the CSCS Alliance, with CSCS providing strategic and practical support.

As our new Chief Executive, you will operate with considerable reach, responding operationally to legislative and industry change whilst delivering the CSCS Board’s strategy to ensure that the scheme is fit for purpose and well run. In doing so, you will deliver industry assurance, an outstanding customer experience and value for money whilst also preventing fraud, which remains a key challenge.  In future, we may need to expand to support domestic construction, so prior experience of scaling operations may have some relevance moving forward. All in all, however, this role will be about the iterative development of the business, qualifying the workforce in a key supporting role.

We are looking for a service orientated leader who understands the construction sector, its changing skills agenda and building safety, and it’s vital that our appointee is a good cultural fit, able to operate at all levels across industry. Operating respectfully with quiet authority, intellect and emotional intelligence, you will pay attention to industry change, operating at pace to anticipate and respond appropriately to a variety of stakeholder requirements, with the strength of character and personal credibility to hold the line when required. As importantly, you will bring strong people and commercial leadership credentials that will enable you to run CSCS well, inspiring, developing and eliciting outstanding performance from internal teams and external partners alike in support of the dynamic industry we support.
