At the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO), we provide a free national service for citizens with unresolved complaints, making final decisions on complaints that have not been solved by the NHS in England, UK government departments and some UK public organisations. To this end, we operate with substantial influence to address injustice and inequality, operating with independence and impartiality to hold institutions and organisations to account, to right individual wrongs. With a holistic view of the public service landscape, we are in a unique position to identify and respond to recurrent issues, and our work frequently leads to systemic change that makes organisations, and people’s experience of them, better.

Increasingly visible and active in the international Ombudsman community, we are well on the way to becoming an exemplary Ombudsman service, clear in our values of Independence, Fairness, Excellence and Transparency. We have taken significant strides forward in resolving challenging cases, producing influential policy reports that are taken seriously by Parliament, and restoring the trust of stakeholders. We have a strong voice and we have reported on a range of issues, from the impact of Windrush, to HS2, to State Pension age communications. Our work is societally important.

There is much to be done as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and embark on an ambitious new strategy. It is imperative that we continue to raise the profile  of the service, finding more effective ways of reaching vulnerable, disadvantaged communities to ensure that we support those most in need. We need to add to the diversity and inclusiveness of our teams at all levels of operation and oversight so that our own people reflect the communities we seek to serve, and we must operate with maximum efficiency, so that our energies can be directed to where they are needed most.

We are looking for at least two new Board members to join a well- functioning and collaborative team, who will bring the necessary experience and personal values and qualities that well help shape strategic thinking, as we navigate these unprecedented circumstances and push ahead with our new three-year strategic plan.

We are looking for individuals from a range of backgrounds and are particularly interested in people with at least one of the following: public outreach/communications experience, administrative justice/legal background, or experience of engaging with the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.
