With a history stretching back 200 years, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is the cornerstone of government’s work with one of our most important transport sectors.  An Executive Agency sponsored by the Department for Transport (DfT), we work to prevent the loss of life on the coast and at sea, produce legislation and guidance on maritime matters, and provide certification to ships and seafarers. We also provide a 24/7 maritime search and rescue service around the UK coast, and international search and rescue, through HM Coastguard and have made significant strides in the technology and assets available to us enabling us to enhance our capability considerably. We are the only UK-wide emergency services organisation, and our team of around 1,000 staff and 3,500 volunteers makes a vital contribution to the UK’s economic wellbeing, public safety, and international reputation.

The MCA has a long and distinguished past, but a dynamic and challenging present and future with an ambition for transformational change.   We are looking to appoint a Non-Executive Director who will embrace the challenge of providing a high-quality service while adapting to the changing needs both commercially and environmentally across the global shipping sector.  A leader that is able to bring credibility and connectivity to the sector and engage at Board level to, act as an ambassador in the sector for the organisation, building sustainable relationships at the most senior levels. We will call on your strategic nous, excellent judgement, and outstanding leadership credentials to help us think about how we convene our partners and stakeholders to contribute to the future direction of this critical sector of the economy, challenging us all to think creatively about the opportunities ahead.      

You will have a successful track record of Board level leadership in a substantial, complex organisation. Strategically minded, you will have had experience of making a contribution to matters of public policy, from a commercial or public sector perspective, and will be an expert influencer and relationship builder. You will bring customer focus and a value for money focused delivery challenge to the Board.
