Department for Work and Pensions
The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) is a major Department of State that plays a critical role in UK life. Operating at significant size and scope, we provide services and support to over 22 million people every year, responsible for over 730 million benefits payments, totalling some £173.1 billion. Engaged in delivering a once in a generation programme of welfare reform, we are committed to: Helping citizens into sustained employment, increased earnings, and self-sufficiency; reducing the disadvantages faced by disabled people and people with healthcare conditions; Increasing savings for and providing financial security in later life and maximising the number of children benefitting from an effective child maintenance arrangement.
Underpinning our ability to meet these commitments is our investment in Digital, Data and Technology, harnessing the potential of new and existing tech to deliver an Agile, user centred, product and services architecture roadmap of unparalleled scale, complexity, and ambition. As data is at the heart of much of our societal interaction with increasing migration to online service delivery, UK government is facing an unprecedented challenge and opportunity around the use of personal and aggregated data to improve service delivery for users.
Against this backdrop, DWP’s ambition is to become a truly data-driven department. We collect and manage a vast array of data and we want to use this to:
- Target the right support at the right people at the right time.
- Improve our users’ lives and experiences safely.
- Work across departments to improve the overall experience of interacting with UK government.
To achieve the right outcomes for our users, we need to ensure that these insights are available across the organisation, and we are now looking for a Head of Enterprise Insight to make all of this happen.
About the role
The successful candidate will be accountable for building a world-class insight function in the Department for Work and Pensions, developing the organisational design and vision that will enable insight specialists to transform the work of the whole Department. At the head of a multi-disciplinary team of Digital and Data professionals, the work that you lead is part of the national main effort to rebuild the UK Labour Market. Your insights enable teams across DWP to better understand the dynamics of UK working age citizens. This constitutes a core part of the Prime Minister’s daily dashboard.
Key to your team’s success will be the delivery of a solution that enables DWP to deliver sustainable reporting across the Department using a platform designed for Industrialisation, delivering Data Trust and Automation. You will own and iterate the strategy for DWP Enterprise Insight and provide a strategic set of reporting services and solutions, to support decision making across the various lines of business. By setting the vision and leading the department’s data and analytics strategy for the Labour Market, you’ll improve citizen outcomes.
In addition, you’ll work with cross-government colleagues on open data standards to establish DWP leadership in this area and take a key role in the cross-government senior data community, building the right relationships so that the DWP can work seamlessly with others to improve user outcomes
Your team leadership skills will be an important part of your make up and you’ll be working with the Chief Data Officer, HR, and data users to create the team that’s needed to make DWP data driven. You’ll take on the role of SME to define and deliver the skill set DWP needs to meet its data strategy and five-year plan and become user-focused with its data by transforming capabilities internally and recruiting the people we need to become a world-class data team.
This is an exceptional opportunity to play a decisive part in creating the culture and opportunity to make our ambitions a reality; to transform service delivery through data in DWP; and, to use data to improve people’s lives.
