The Animal and Plant Heath Agency’s (APHA) science campus at Weybridge plays a nationally important role in protecting human and animal health. One of only 30 such sites across the world, it has a wide range of specialist and complex scientific facilities, including at the highest level of containment.

The Science Capability in Animal Health (SCAH) programme has been established to oversee the re-development of the APHA site – a 10-year programme, with a budget in excess of £1bn.

We are seeking an experienced Construction Director to lead the construction delivery work stream covering all construction related activities and delivery planning including the main works, enabling and early works contracts. Working closely with other members of the senior programme team, you will ensure that best international practices in safe, efficient, sustainable construction technologies are considered in the development of the technical design for the programme and that best practice in construction technology is adopted, ensuring constructability of the design.

The successful candidate will bring an extensive track record of leading and delivering portfolios of multi-million-pound, large scale construction projects in complex and/or highly regulated environments. They will be able to evidence exemplary people skills, with an ability to forge and maintain constructive, collaborative relationships with a large and complex stakeholder network, including with site users, and throughout the full supply chain. Establishing trust and confidence will be key as you will need to challenge assumptions and influence direction. This role will also require sound business acumen and a commercial mind as you build the supply chain for this multifaceted programme, maintaining a strong focus on performance and value for money.

You will be an outstanding leader, with a track record of building small but motivated, high performing teams with an inclusive culture.

The SCAH programme is one of a handful of programmes of this scale and complexity in the world and offers a rare chance for an experienced and committed senior construction professional to undertake a career defining role at the heart of the UK’s critical infrastructure. Not only will you be building for the future, but you will also be playing a central role in making sure that the site continues to be operational on a day-to-day basis, so that staff and facilities are prepared to respond to animal health disease emergencies whenever they might arise.

If you are excited by the prospect of the challenges and opportunities it will bring and want to make your mark in building the UK’s scientific capability, we want to hear from you. Join us, and together we will create a great place for living, and a green and healthy future for all.
