The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, responsible for cleaning up the UK’s earliest nuclear sites safely, securely, and cost-effectively with care for people and the environment. In the UK, we’ve benefited from nuclear technology for many decades. We’ve used it to power homes, diagnose and treat serious illnesses, and to drive industry. As a result, we’ve produced various different types of radioactive waste and more will be created in the future. Safe, secure and efficient management of this material is an essential part of the NDA’s mission.

The NDA is simplifying and strengthening how it manages waste across its entire lifecycle and has created a unified waste business, Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) that brings together two existing organisations Low Level Waste Repository Ltd (LLWR) and Radioactive Waste Management Ltd (RWM). Nuclear Waste Services will leverage opportunities in waste treatment, packaging, storage, transport and disposal to enable the whole of the nuclear industry to manage its waste in a more sustainable, efficient and integrated way, demonstrating greater value for the UK taxpayer.

As part of this journey, the NDA is now seeking to appoint a Chair to lead Nuclear Waste Services’  Board as it sets the strategic framework and direction for operations, in alignment with the NDA’s strategic objectives.  Working closely with NWS’ CEO designate and others where appropriate, the Chair will use their experience to shape and define the company’s strategy and scrutinise the delivery of it. The Chair will set the expectation and pace for change and improvement, and will represent the organisation to NDA stakeholders, suppliers, Government, regulators and the communities in which the NDA operates.

In addition to performing the core role of a Chair, we are seeking candidates with expertise in the delivery of complex, high risk, high spend programmes to offer insight into the ongoing operational excellence of the business. They will be a recognised leader and non-executive with an in-depth understanding of operating within a similarly complex group structure, capable of heading up a board in accordance with the UK Corporate Governance Code. Above all, the new appointment will bring a demonstrable track record of senior leadership in the delivery of safety critical projects and programmes in a highly regulated sector with public accountability.

The ideal candidate will also possess an understanding of building diverse boards and will be an effective communicator across complex stakeholder landscapes. Preferably, favouring a collaborative working style, s/he build effective relationships with board colleagues, the executive team, and across the organisation with an open and personable style.

We value the unique differences that each of our colleagues bring to work every day and are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels respected, included, and able to perform at their best.  At the NDA we are committed to creating a workplace that is diverse and inclusive, and we therefore particularly welcome applications from women, BAME, LGBT+ and disabled candidates.
