Ref: GSe68800

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) exists to ensure that the United Kingdom prospers through fair and safe trade, representing a membership of trading standards professionals working in local government, central government and the private sector. CTSI are consumer protection experts and their work serves to protect some of the most vulnerable in society from the harms of dishonest practice and unsafe products. They ensure, through influence in government and the frontline work done by members, that the UK operates with level and fair trading conditions for honest businesses to thrive. CTSI delivers qualifications, training and other services to more than 2000 individual and corporate members and has a critical policy and influencing role with local and central government, industry and the media.

This is a challenging time for the profession. Ongoing financial pressures have seen funding in the local government arena cut to levels where too many consumers and businesses are now exposed to the dangers of criminal and unsafe practices. CTSI sits at the heart of developing, communicating and delivering a vision of how these crucial services can continue to be provided in an effective and meaningful manner across the UK in years to come.

The new Chief Executive will work with the Chair and Board to lead on the delivery of the strategic aims and business plan priorities of CTSI and its companies, providing professional leadership to the Institute’s membership and wider trading standards community. Ensuring that there is a strong culture of effective performance and financial control is critical, as is maintaining and continuing to promote CTSI’s voice and influence in local and national government and parliamentary outcomes across the UK and Europe.

For this role we are seeking an experienced, people focused leader who can work to ensure the Institute is able to adapt and deliver in the face of a rapidly changing profession. Whether a trading standards professional or not, you will demonstrate an ability to build effective and lasting relationships with members, building on the platform the Institute has provided them for the last 130 years. An inspiring leader, with outstanding communication skills, you will drive a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement and engagement and will embody the purpose and values of CTSI. You do not currently need to be a Chief Executive, but you will bring a demonstrable track record operating at the most senior levels in organisations of comparable size and complexity. You will bring strong engagement skills, commercial acumen and the proven ability to be a credible ambassador, making sure CTSI has impact and influence in key areas of local and central government public policy.

Visible, inclusive and motivating, you will be able to exercise both diplomacy and sensitivity when required yet be capable of making tough decisions where needed. You will have a strong commitment to diversity & inclusion, encouraging and developing its place in both the staff and membership in both practice and thought leadership. Your integrity, standing and judgement will inspire confidence in CTSI and its work, enabling it to hold the respect of a demanding and rapidly changing sector.

For an informal, confidential discussion, please contact Matt Malone, Katrina Paget or Julie Myers on 0113 205 6063.

We are actively seeking applications from every part of the community. We are especially interested to hear from candidates from backgrounds that are underrepresented in CTSI and our recruitment process is designed to be fair and accessible for all applicants.
