With over 20,000 Members across its global community, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) is a professional body that exists to promote the art, science and practice of building services engineering, by providing first class information and education services and promoting the spirit of fellowship which guides its work. CIBSE leads the profession of building services engineering by accrediting courses of study in further and higher education and is the standard setter and authority on building services engineering. The Institution provides the voice for the profession, is consulted by government on matters relating to construction, engineering and sustainability and is represented on major bodies and organisations which govern construction and engineering occupations in the UK, Europe and worldwide.
CIBSE is now seeking an exceptional Chief Executive to take the organisation through the next stage in its development and deliver its new strategy, following the upcoming retirement of Stephen Matthews, after 15 years in the role. This is an exciting and challenging time to join CIBSE and offers a unique opportunity to play an influential role in a sector which has grown, developed and diversified significantly over the last few years. A solid financial foundation has enabled the Institution to maintain the stability of its business through the Covid-19 pandemic, but there are still challenges ahead - as there are for almost every organisation.
Our new Chief Executive will bring commercial acumen and demonstrable experience in leading transformation and business growth, to secure the ongoing success of the organisation. You will embody the purpose and values of CIBSE and will work with the President and Trustee Board to shape CIBSE’s long term mission, strategic objectives and annual plans. You will drive a culture of collaboration and high performance, and build trusted relationships with staff, our members and external stakeholders.
Candidates will have a track record of senior leadership within an organisation of comparable scale and complexity. Whilst experience in the engineering sector would be useful, it is not essential, but you will need the demonstrable ability to quickly get to grips with CIBSE’s key policy drivers and give confidence that you possess the credibility to play a key ambassadorial role in promoting the impact of the Institution’s work and influence. You will evidence success in developing and implementing organisation wide strategy and demonstrate people-focused leadership in a complex stakeholder landscape. Your vision, credibility and determination to get things done will make you a strong candidate for this uniquely interesting and demanding position.
