Providing support to the Strategic Director, you will be the Council’s Chief Legal Advisor, tasked with providing strategic leadership to Legal and Democratic Services. As the Council’s most senior legal officer, you will use your experience to provide professional advice on the full range of issues that challenge local government, so your knowledge base will need to be extensive.  As well as these technical demands, you must also lead on developing and monitoring the culture within the Department, ensuring that the Council’s values and behaviours drive the way it conducts itself.

As the Monitoring Officer, you will need experience, excellent judgement and people skills to ensure that the Council maintains its standards of legal compliance and good governance.  Given the complexity of local government issues, experience of working in a political environment would be a large plus.  You will also provide legal and governance advice to the Chief Executive, Members, Officers and the Lord Mayor in Full Council. You will be responsible for the Governance team including Committee Services Scrutiny and Electoral services .

In this multi-faceted role, your department will be handling around c7,500 cases every year, so it’s the perfect challenge for a visionary solicitor with substantial post qualification experience who isn’t daunted by working on a large scale. You will be at divisional manager level in a complex organisation with a successful track record of giving legal advice to senior managers. With good powers of persuasion, you will be a robust and decisive leader.  You will need to identify and implement innovative, integrated service arrangements which build on the service’s private and public partnerships.
