It is a great time to join Bedford Hospital and we are looking to appoint a Chief Operating Officer to help us to deliver health care that changes lives.

Bedford Hospital is situated in a beautiful part of the UK in the county of Bedfordshire. Bedford is a riverside town with easy access to quiet unspoilt countryside. Bedford has a rich and diverse community with over 50 different ethnic groups represented across the hospital’s catchment area.

It is a district general hospital providing consultant led 24-hour accident and emergency services, acute medicine, maternity, paediatrics and a range of surgical specialties. The hospital has approximately 400 inpatient beds and more than 2,800 staff – making us one of the largest local employers.  The hospital provides a full range of district general hospital services and also has recently opened an Urgent Treatment Centre, offering out of hours care for patients across Bedfordshire.  There is a full Level 2 A&E Department with a recently opened Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit. The Critical Care Complex provides High Dependency and Intensive Care beds to a maximum capacity of 12 beds. Other clinical services include Cardiology, Dermatology and Plastic Surgery (including a Laser Treatment Centre).

The Trust is a member of a number of well-developed clinical networks across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas, including the East of England cancer, cardiac and stroke networks. It is an arterial hub for vascular services (commissioned by NHS England) and part of the Beds, Herts and Bucks Maxillofacial Network.  In addition there are strong existing clinical networks with Addenbrooke’s (Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) for cancer, paediatrics, neurology and Otoneurology (ENT). There are network arrangements with the Luton & Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for stroke and head and neck cancers, and Northampton General Hospital for plastics. Pathology services are provided by Viapath, and Ophthalmology is sub-contracted to Moorfields Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

We are pleased and encouraged with the results of the 2018 staff survey.  Our overall national ranking improved significantly and we were identified as being most improved in two survey themes in comparison to our colleagues in the Eastern Region and overall our staff feel well supported, engaged and would recommend the hospital as a place to work or receive treatment.

We need someone with a demonstrable track record gained in a leadership role at or near Board level within a large and complex healthcare organisation.  You will have substantial experience gained in operational management across a diverse portfolio of services and will have worked at the forefront of continuously improving quality, patient experience and outcomes to ensure we can work towards and achieve an ‘outstanding’ CQC rating.

You will be working with people who access and use our services, their families and carers as well as staff, partners and key stakeholders – inspiring them with your ideas and your passion for high quality care.

An established leader with substantial senior management experience, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of operational strategies and plans, leading on critical aspects of care.

You will bring resilience, credibility, integrity and creativity to the role, and will be passionate about providing the highest standards of patient care.

As a key player in our senior leadership team, you will operate as part of our Trust Board and will be responsible for defining our strategy as well as ensuring the organisation is robust and resilient and capable of delivering life-changing services at all times.
