Surrey County Council
Surrey County Council (SCC) has a high profile as one of the largest local authorities in England, but we currently have some tough challenges and have embarked on a programme of radical change. We are undertaking significant fast-paced improvements across the council to support the desired step change in both culture and modernising services to be a cost effective organisation that focuses on the best possible outcomes for the people of Surrey as outlined in our Community Vision 2030.
As part our improvement journey across our Children’s Families, Learning and Culture Directorate Liz Mills (Director of Education, Lifelong Learning and Culture) has re- aligned her services to ensure they are delivered in a way that is consistent with other aspects of children’s services. “Through strong leadership, increased capacity and the development of new practise models we are forging onwards with our journey of change to drive service improvements that will deliver better outcomes, and sustainable services for our children, young people and their families.”
We are looking to appoint an Assistant Director Lifelong Learning and Culture who’s responsibilities will include developing an overarching strategy for lifelong learning, utilising available resources in the community to ensure maximum impact in respect of strengthening communities, supporting vulnerable people and promoting good mental health and wellbeing. As part of this you will need to devise, drive, support and deliver high quality education to children, young people and adults through a range of programmes, alternative provision and adult and community learning.
We are looking for a candidate who can evidence experience of high performance in this area when it comes to shortlisting but we don’t just look at this when it comes to recruiting. We employ people who share our values and are comfortable embodying our working principals, these become even more important as a leader and senior manager. This means you will feel comfortable inspiring and leading others by:
Being open and inviting – with everyone you work with in and out of the organsiation.
Being curious – actively seeking out good examples of good practice, people, ideas, expertise, behaviours and be informed and inspired by them!
Assuming we are all adults – assume other people are capable, mature and have good intent, using language and actions to show them this.
Being clear, concise and concrete – be clear and crisp about what you mean, and say clearly what you need from others and why.
Attack the plaque! – Clear the clutter, then keep it clear… don’t add something new without clearing away the old.
