The role

Looking after older people and vulnerable adults is a key priority for Birmingham City Council. That means developing an integrated framework, in partnership with NHS partners and other agencies, which promotes independence, wellbeing and choice. Joining the council as part of a new streamlined leadership team, you’ll have responsibility for a portfolio of adult social care services including Social Work, Mental Health, Safeguarding, Enablement Services, Learning Disabilities and Community and Residential Services. This is an opportunity to use innovative approaches such as IT and assistive technology to deliver high-quality services while achieving value for money and efficiency savings. You will translate strategic priorities into operational plans to ensure we create a resilient system that delivers the social care needs of a 21st century city.

The person

You’ll bring senior-level experience of managing adult social care at a strategic level, including safeguarding and partnership working. This should include a good grasp of the statutory and regulatory responsibilities of local government, and the ability to deliver services within challenging budgets. You’ll combine this with a strong citizen and community focus. Experience of developing effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders and negotiating with outside agencies is essential, including the ability to create new sources of income and secure major funding. The pace will be rapid so you’ll need to be focused on delivery, but as priorities may change, flexibility and adaptability are also important.  You’re likely to hold a relevant professional qualification in healthcare or social care.
