Delivering homes that people want

Providing quality affordable housing is a huge challenge. Southwark has committed to 11,00 new homes by 2043.
We'll be building new homes and continuing to maintain and improve the over 54,000 current homes for residents. It'll take a coordinated effort using all our skills.

We will increase the supply new council homes and affordable and private homes across Southwark as part of wider programme of regeneration.

We will support vulnerable individuals and families to live as independently as possible.

We will increase our resident satisfaction by listening.

By demanding the highest standards of quality, 'thinking outside the box' and using our resources effectively we will be able to provide homes for residents to be proud of.

Michael Scorer
Strategic Director of Housing & Modernisation

You'll be joining Southwark during one of its most challenging periods. Southwark is a place full of energy where regeneration and development abound. However, many of our residents struggle with low income, poor housing and a lack of affordable alternatives to a council home, for which we have a waiting list of around 10,000 households.

New build
We are dedicated to delivery of new homes that meet the demands of those waiting, often in lesser conditions. There is little space in the Borough and we have to work hard to identify opportunities.

Knowledge of building design, planning law and practice together with a solid understanding of making things work will be essential.

Leadership will drive the delivery - managing the strategic vision and providing technical guidance.

The Director of New Homes is responsible for the programme to deliver 11,000 new homes by 2043, as part of the Council’s Fairer Future promises to meet the needs of many overcrowded and homeless residents in the borough.

Ensuring effective resources, communications and engagement strategies are is in place and driving through large and complex programmes: from the identification of new sites through to completion.

We are on a journey to regenerate the borough: knowledge and appreciation of how good design can bring wider benefits to neighbourhoods will be integral to our ‘great estates’ plan.

Strong contract management experience, procurement skills and innovative thinking are key to working with a range of external stakeholders, and to leverage the linkages and influence a social landlord the size of Southwark maintains.

Commercial acumen will support in leading establishment of the council’s construction company.

We have a pipeline for the first tranche of 2,000 homes to be delivered by 2022.

We are well resourced and highly motivated.

We require someone who has extensive experience of delivering a large housing capital programme, whether in a local government setting or otherwise.

You will however be credible with our residents and passionate about delivering our commitments to them.
