We are Defence Medical Services, a critical element of the UK Armed Forces. We play a vital part in the delivery of some of Defence’s most complex and modern outputs. Our primary role is to promote, protect and restore the health of the UK’s servicemen and women. We ensure they are ready and medically fit to go where they are needed in the UK and throughout the world, and cover all medical professional groups, from hospital consultants and GPs through to military paramedics and nurses. Our work supports the health and wellbeing – dental, mental, medical and occupational – of more than 190,000 service personnel.
The new post of Director General, Defence Medical Services (DG DMS) is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the UK’s international standing and prosperity. This unique and challenging role will ensure provision of access to safe, effective and efficient healthcare for all entitled Ministry of Defence personnel, when deployed and at home, and that medical personnel are trained, qualified and experienced to provide the best care possible to our servicemen and women. Leading over 6,700 dedicated and talented people and accountable for an annual operating budget of c.£480m, the postholder will also play an important ambassadorial role, representing DMS nationally and internationally. They will contribute, too, to some of Defence’s key strategic improvement initiatives, and be excited by the chance to bring about innovation and progress.
We are looking for a truly exceptional individual to undertake this enormously important leadership post. You can demonstrate excellent technical understanding of the UK healthcare landscape, as well as successful stewardship of large, complex delivery organisations. Your influencing skills are first rate, and you will be comfortable and confident operating at the highest levels. Just as important are the strategic vision, tenacity and pragmatism to lead and embed ‘real life’ transformation, and you will be able to point to a track record acting as an agent of genuine, sustainable change.
The MoD is interested in excellence wherever it occurs, and this role is no exception. You might already hold a senior role in government, or you may currently be running a high-performing NHS Trust. If you bring the leadership credentials this job needs and deep understanding of healthcare in the UK – ‘here and now’ priorities and emerging trends – we want to hear from you.
