You will find a short video from the Chief Executive here.

Transport for the North is a public-private partnership responsible for setting transport investment priorities. We were formed to transform the transport system across the North of England, providing the infrastructure needed to drive economic growth.

Our role is to add strategic value by ensuring funding and strategy decisions about transport in the North are informed by local knowledge and requirements. This fits with the devolution agenda and we draw powers down from central government rather than up from local government. In doing so, we speak to Government with one, unified voice on the issues that affect the lives of millions.

Our vision is of a thriving North of England, where modern transport connections drive economic growth and support an excellent quality of life.

We require an inspirational and dynamic leader to take the organisation to new heights, building on the excellent work done to date in establishing Transport for the North as the UK’s first Sub-national Transport Body with statutory status. You’ll join us at a point when we will be launching our Strategic Transport Plan in the first part of 2019, a 30-year blueprint for growth that will act as a framework for the major projects we are spearheading.

As our Strategy & Programme Director, you will be at the forefront of shaping the future of Transport in the North of England by influencing and leading the continual development and delivery of the Strategic Transport Plan, as well as having direct oversight of some of the North’s most significant and high-profile infrastructure projects across rail; road; freight; sea and air.

This is a senior role that is fundamental to our success. Your evidence-based work will be at the bedrock of the business cases that will deliver a step-change in investment in the North. To respond to the challenges ahead we are looking for a candidate who will be able to secure influence across our complex community of stakeholders by creating a sense of shared vision and common goals. It will be an opportunity for the successful candidate to make a lasting impression on the economy of the North of England through the ideas and energy they bring.

This diverse and demanding role presents a unique personal and professional challenge for the successful candidate.

We look forward to receiving your application.

Barry White

Chief Executive of TfN

Transport for the North (TfN) is a public-private partnership responsible for setting transport investment priorities for the North. Its members speak with one voice to Government, driving transformational economic growth and creating a vibrant, prosperous North through better connectivity.

As Strategy and Programme Director, you will play an important role in shaping the future of transport across the North of England, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. A commanding leader, you will have direct oversight of some of the North’s most significant and high-profile infrastructure projects across rail; road; freight; sea and air.

TfN’s work is pioneering. As the UK’s first sub-national transport body, it is changing the way transport is planned and delivered. You will make our vision a reality, taking ownership of the delivery of the long-term, pan-Northern strategy – the Strategic Transport Plan – and spearheading compelling evidence to support investment decisions.

You will twin strategic leadership with strong project management experience, alongside the confidence to communicate with a diverse and complex stakeholder community. A team of strategy, programme and appraisal professionals will look to you as an inspiring leader, in a role in which you will become a trusted external voice for TfN and build your professional profile exponentially.

This senior role is integral to TfN’s success. Your evidence-based work will be at the bedrock of the business cases that will deliver a step-change in investment in the North. Not only will you be a guiding voice in shaping strategy, you will manage the programme framework, holding partners to high standards and minimising risks.

This appointment requires not only extensive knowledge of transport planning and strategy, but an infectious passion to drive economic growth through change and take others on that journey. You will be adept at managing infrastructure projects, with a honed understanding of the regional and national policy context and political prowess. Your ability to turn technical information into coherent investment stories will help our communities see the broader picture and support the TfN vision.

By joining TfN you can make a tangible difference to people’s lives, creating new opportunities and cementing the North’s position as a productive, global economy.
