Publishers' Licensing Services (PLS) provides rights management services to the publishing industry. Our primary remit is to oversee collective licensing in the UK for book, journal, magazine and website copying. We distributed more than £34 million from collective licensing in 2017/18 and have more than 3,850 publishers signed up with us.  We are one of the owners and direct the Copyright Licensing Agency, and work in partnership with NLA media access. Our Vision is to provide efficient and effective copyright and licensing solutions to support publishers in providing access to their content.

The PLS Board is comprised of twelve publishers and officers from our four trade association member organisations plus the Chief Executive and our Chair, who also has an ex officio role as Co-Chair of the Copyright Licensing Agency, a position which alternates on an annual basis.

Our current Chair, Mark Bide, is stepping down from his second and final 3-year term. His successor must have a demonstrable record of leadership in substantial roles and proven chairing and board level experience. With a track record of senior leadership gained within or working closely with the publishing industry, our new Chair will bring personal credibility, strong diplomatic skills and the ability to command confidence with our many stakeholders. You will have outstanding commercial vision, the ability to challenge effectively and think innovatively, together with demonstrable experience of leading and embedding sustainable change and digital transformation in a complex multi-stakeholder environment.

The remuneration for this position is £50,000 for a time commitment of broadly 1 day per week (c.50 days pa) for a three-year term. To be eligible for this position, on appointment the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate independence from any position with PLS’ member organisations.
