This is an exciting opportunity to Chair a new £30m grant making charity which aims to improve the lives of people who work or have worked in the UK shipbuilding, engineering and related manufacturing industries, as well as their families and dependants.

Named after the former General Secretary of the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions (the CSEU), Alex Ferry Limited was created with the assets of a trust fund established in 1989 by the CSEU to provide financial support to workers in the UK shipbuilding and engineering industries and in related manufacturing industries who were then engaged in industrial action. Following conclusion of the industrial action, a surplus was left in the fund. Over time, that surplus has increased and as at the end of May 2018, the value of the fund was £32.6 million. That sum will now provide the initial funding of Alex Ferry Limited.

We are seeking an experienced Chair and grant maker to join us as an Independent Trustee Director. You will guide the development of our policies and procedures and lead a diverse Board of Trustees, to maximise our impact in those communities whose contributions nearly 30 years ago have created this unique charity.

This is an outstanding opportunity for someone passionate about effective grant making and committed to making a difference to people’s lives. You will bring experience of leading and managing teams and will be a skilled negotiator and influencer with sharp political acumen and a deep commitment to building effective relationships. We are looking for someone who knows how to get things done ensuring that we operate as an efficient and effective grant maker.
