The Senior Directors for Competition Enforcement will report to the Executive Director, Competition Enforcement and work in close partnership with the Senior Executive Team and the Board to deliver impactful outcomes for people, businesses and the UK economy. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Be an active, collaborative and engaged member of the CMA’s Senior Leadership Team, with shared leadership responsibility to develop and deliver the CMA’s strategy and values.
  • Contribute to relevant senior decision-making fora including meetings of the Board, XCo, Case and Policy Committee (CPC), Resourcing, Portfolio and Pipeline Committee (RPPC) and other committees and groups as appropriate.
  • Contribute to setting the strategic direction for the CMA’s Competition Enforcement, using the full range of our toolkit to tackle anti-competitive activity at pace, and ensure harmful and illegal activity is deterred.
  • Shape the CMA’s Competition Enforcement policy and practice to ensure we continually improve the way we work, including driving improvements in efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Accountable for the implementation of the CMA’s strategy for Competition Enforcement work, and in particular by ensuring that CA98 cases are delivered efficiently and effectively and to tight timelines, that businesses are given appropriate support to comply with competition law (including as regards beneficial collaborations)
  • Develop a strong ‘pipeline’ of prospective Competition Enforcement cases and in accordance with the CMA’s strategic priorities.
  • Build and maintain skills, expertise, and diversity within the CMA’s Competition Enforcement Directorate, supporting staff development and anticipating future needs. Develop local leadership and management teams, and act as a role model.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external bodies, including international and national competition and regulatory authorities, as well as relevant business, legal, economic, consumer and other representatives.
  • Lead a team of professional colleagues, supported by advisory colleagues through a matrix model, ensuring effective resourcing of ongoing and prospective projects, adjusting as necessary in light of resourcing demands across the CMA.
  • Accountable as the “Senior Responsible Officer” or Case or Litigation Decision Group member for a range of Competition Enforcement cases.
  • Working closely with the CMA’s wider teams and functions, including the CMA’s Legal Service and OCEA, ensure that the CMA maintains the highest standards of analytical rigour and procedural fairness in its Competition Enforcement cases, identifies and mitigates risks, and draws cases to timely conclusions
