We are seeking a new Comptroller & Auditor General to lead the Jersey Audit Office, for a 7 year term from 1st January 2027, when the current C&AG term comes to an end. The role holder will deliver independent, high-quality audit assurance and insight to the States Assembly regarding public finances. The C&AG’s remit spans financial audits, value for money, internal financial controls, and corporate governance, which extends to the States of Jersey, and other bodies established, owned or part-funded by the States of Jersey.

The C&AG will lead the Jersey Audit Office providing robust and independent assurance to the States Assembly. The Office exists to provide the very highest quality audit assurance and insight to the States Assembly and will have the opportunity to make a real difference to Jersey’s public finances and services.

We are looking for a senior professional who understands the importance of public audit and who is able to operate in a highly political and complex environment while maintaining and demonstrating independence, sound judgement and the ability to give robust assurance at the most senior levels, while subject to intense scrutiny from the media, politicians and the public.

The C&AG has discretion and independence in carrying out his/her functions, subject to the provisions of the Comptroller and Auditor General (Jersey) Law 2014 (the Law) and the Code of Practice which must be prepared under the Law.

The C&AG will oversee the development, direction, management and conduct of the Jersey Audit Office. It will be important for the C&AG to work constructively and closely with the Chair of the Board of Governance to maintain internal governance and controls consistent with best practice. The C&AG will need to comply with the JAO Code of Conduct.

The C&AG will appreciate the importance of balancing risk and benefits when undertaking work and making recommendations, recognising Jersey’s position as a small jurisdiction, helping the States Assembly and the Government achieve positive financial outcomes and deliver value for money, thereby making a meaningful difference to people’s lives.

The C&AG must also build effective working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders including the States Assembly, in particular the Public Accounts Committee, and the States of Jersey. An important part of the role will be to balance the outward facing role that the C&AG will have, with leading the team and managing the organisation and its resources.
