At the Royal Academy of Engineering, we create and lead a community of outstanding experts and innovators to engineer better lives. As a charity and a Fellowship, we convene leading business people, entrepreneurs, innovators and academics to deliver public benefit from excellence in engineering and technology. They do this through addressing some of the biggest challenges facing society today, from climate change to global health pandemics and cyber threats. As a National Academy, we provide leadership for engineering and technology, and independent, expert advice to policymakers in the UK and beyond.

It’s an exciting time to join us as we look forward to celebrating our 50th year in 2026 and embark on the delivery of our new strategy. Strategy 2030 will build on the engineering excellence we’ve delivered over the past five years through the introduction of new goals. These will include unlocking greater societal value from technology, and focusing on place to ensure that engineering is delivering to the needs of people in different contexts and regions.

As our new Chief Operating Officer, you’ll play a key role in our continued pursuit of excellence as we drive even stronger performance through new capabilities, maximising the contribution of digital, data and product capability whilst adopting a more entrepreneurial spirit to secure additional new funding sources that align with our mission and purpose and enable us to deliver greater value.

We are looking for an exceptional leader to drive operational effectiveness and excellence for the Academy, ensuring business strategies are implemented to meet organisational goals and helping, as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, to ensure that we meet our ambitious objectives and aspirations for impact.

This is a highly influential and visible role with functional responsibility to the Trustee Board and its Committees and direct leadership for a broad range of functions, including Finance, People, Risk, Compliance & Governance, Fellowship election and engagement, Digital and IT, Facilities and Executive Services. In addition, you will be responsible for ensuring a seamless and highly effective partnership between operational and external expertise, critical to executing the Academy strategy.

Over and above commensurate experience, we are looking for someone who places values and integrity at the core of their leadership, and who will help us shape a culture of inclusion, excellence and continuous improvement, so that we can make a genuine difference to the lives of many.

We are proud of our organisation and our exceptional Academy Fellows who are making a positive difference in the world. If this sounds like the environment for you, we look forward to hearing from you.
