The Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) is an independent body, established by Parliament and accountable to the Speaker’s Committee of the House of Commons. Its main responsibility is to conduct electoral reviews by considering the electoral boundaries of local authorities in England and recommending any changes to Parliament.

The LGBCE has a good reputation for its impartial, transparent and consultative approach, delivering high-quality electoral reviews that command high levels of confidence. It is supported in carrying out its work by its strong relationships – with local authorities, with the Speaker’s Committee and with the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government – and the Commission’s next Chair will be pivotal in continuing to build and maintain these.

The new Chair will play a critical role in the next, exciting phase of the Commission—building on the work of the outgoing Chair, and benefitting from the support of a small but strong team of Commissioners and staff—ensuring it continues to be respected by those it works with and delivers fair electoral and boundary arrangements for local electors across England.

We are seeking a senior leader with strong interpersonal and influencing skills, who can effectively lead a Board and organisation, and instil confidence in Parliament, Ministers, local government and the public. To be successful in this role you will need to have an understanding of the political and statutory context in which the LGBCE operates, and an appreciation of the modern local government environment. Experience of independent, evidence-based and impartial decision-making in a transparent environment is also essential. Above all, you will have the highest level of ethical standards, be free of conflicts of interest and political affiliations, and be committed to transparency and accountability and the principles of public life.

Local government boundaries have an impact on every citizen in England, so it is important that LGBCE Chair, Commissioners and staff come from the widest possible range of backgrounds, bringing us the widest possible range of perspectives and ways of thinking. We therefore encourage applications from individuals from all backgrounds, communities and regions of the United Kingdom.
