The Gambling Commission is seeking an exceptional leader to join us as Executive Director of Operations. This pivotal role provides strategic leadership across the largest area of the organisation and presents a rare opportunity to shape the future of gambling regulation in Great Britain and beyond.

Established under the Gambling Act 2005, the Gambling Commission is recognised globally for its regulatory leadership. Our mission is clear: to keep crime out of gambling, to protect vulnerable people, and to ensure that gambling is conducted fairly and openly. With over 22.5 million adults engaging regularly in gambling and an industry generating more than £15 billion in gross revenue, the Commission oversees one of the most complex and rapidly evolving sectors worldwide.

The Executive Director of Operations holds responsibility for a workforce of approximately 140 professionals spanning licensing, compliance, enforcement, and intelligence. This position plays a critical role in delivering regulatory excellence, upholding high standards, and ensuring the organisation remains responsive to emerging challenges, ranging from match-fixing and political betting to anti-money laundering risks.

Close collaboration with the Chief Executive and wider Executive Team forms a core part of the role, contributing to the setting of strategic direction and the handling of complex, often sensitive matters with confidence and clarity. Responsibilities also include representing the Commission at high-profile events, deputising for the Chief Executive when required, and engaging with international regulators to help shape global standards. Leadership in this context has a tangible impact, delivering outcomes that protect millions of people across Great Britain.

Candidates will bring a strong track record of senior operational leadership within a regulated or regulatory setting, with proven ability to lead large, multi-functional teams and drive performance in complex, stakeholder-rich environments. A thorough understanding of statutory frameworks, coupled with experience managing sensitive, high-impact operations, will be important.

Success in the role will also draw on sound judgement, personal resilience, and the ability to deliver under pressure. Political awareness and a clear commitment to public service and meaningful impact will be key.

At the Gambling Commission, you will be joining a values-led organisation that is proud of its culture and people. Our Great Place to Work score has risen significantly, and we are home to experts in data, research, and regulation. This is a rare opportunity to lead in a purpose-driven, innovative environment where your work will shape the future of a vital industry.
